Chapter Four

Unable to wait, Caroline snuck down to the bleachers early. The only light came from the nearly full moon, and she was grateful for it as she navigated her way first over to the bleachers and then underneath them. Not keen to sit on the damp ground, she stood with her back against the wall and tried to think of how to convince Tilda to help them. She’d be the one taking the biggest risk.

Fortunately, Caroline wasn’t the only one eager to get the planning underway, and she heard hushed whispers traveling down the hill towards her. With a frown, she realized there were more than two voices. She stepped sideways into the shadows out of the reach of the moonlight, not wanting to give away her presence until she knew who was there. Caroline’s heart pounded as she counted four sets of feet coming down the bleachers, but she couldn’t make out who they belonged to. The voices moved around her as they came in through the side of the bleachers, and Caroline held her breath in the darkness. There was a small flicker of light before it formed a small flame in the palm of Nadine’s hand as she walked ahead of the others. With a sigh of relief, Caroline stepped forward. Nadine yelped and stopped suddenly, causing the others to run into the back of her. The jolt threatened to extinguish the flame, and Nadine uttered a series of incantations until the flame stopped wavering.

“I didn’t mean to startle you; I just got bored waiting in my room.” Caroline apologized.

“All good! We’re early for the exact same reason. I hope you don’t mind, but I kind of…had to bring a couple of extras.”

“Kind of?” Caroline joked, not wanting her plan jeopardized before she could get it off the ground.

“Sorry, C. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see you after that spectacular display you put on this afternoon. Kicking my butt and in front of the whole school, no less.” Corbin walked past Nadine around to where Caroline stood, his cheeky grin letting her know he didn’t mind so much.

“Hey, Caroline!” Tilda greeted her as she stepped around the side of Nadine, her hand firmly grasping that of Laurent as she led him along behind her.

“So, before you say anything, it wasn’t my fault.” Nadine started, “I went to Tilda’s room and had already started telling her our plan before I realized Laurent was hiding under the bed…”

“Well, you never know who could be knocking on the door…” he said in his defense, releasing Tilda’s hand and throwing his arm around her shoulder instead.

“Of course, he insisted on being included.”

“Okay, but that doesn’t explain Corbin,” Caroline teased.

“Hey, don’t pretend like you aren’t happy to see me. I can see the sparkle in your eyes.” Corbin joked, reaching up to grab hold of the steps above them, putting his muscular arms and shoulders on display.

“I’m pretty sure that’s the reflection of the candle flame you can see, Corbin,” Tilda chimed in, and they all laughed.
