Chapter Four
Unable to wait, Caroline snuck down to the bleachers early. The only light came from the nearly full moon, and she was grateful for it as she navigated her way first over to the bleachers and then underneath them. Not keen to sit on the damp ground, she stood with her back against the wall and tried to think of how to convince Tilda to help them. Sheâd be the one taking the biggest risk.
Fortunately, Caroline wasnât the only one eager to get the planning underway, and she heard hushed whispers traveling down the hill towards her. With a frown, she realized there were more than two voices. She stepped sideways into the shadows out of the reach of the moonlight, not wanting to give away her presence until she knew who was there. Carolineâs heart pounded as she counted four sets of feet coming down the bleachers, but she couldnât make out who they belonged to. The voices moved around her as they came in through the side of the bleachers, and Caroline held her breath in the darkness. There was a small flicker of light before it formed a small flame in the palm of Nadineâs hand as she walked ahead of the others. With a sigh of relief, Caroline stepped forward. Nadine yelped and stopped suddenly, causing the others to run into the back of her. The jolt threatened to extinguish the flame, and Nadine uttered a series of incantations until the flame stopped wavering.
âI didnât mean to startle you; I just got bored waiting in my room.â Caroline apologized.
âAll good! Weâre early for the exact same reason. I hope you donât mind, but I kind ofâ¦had to bring a couple of extras.â
âKind of?â Caroline joked, not wanting her plan jeopardized before she could get it off the ground.
âSorry, C. I couldnât pass up the opportunity to see you after that spectacular display you put on this afternoon. Kicking my butt and in front of the whole school, no less.â Corbin walked past Nadine around to where Caroline stood, his cheeky grin letting her know he didnât mind so much.
âHey, Caroline!â Tilda greeted her as she stepped around the side of Nadine, her hand firmly grasping that of Laurent as she led him along behind her.
âSo, before you say anything, it wasnât my fault.â Nadine started, âI went to Tildaâs room and had already started telling her our plan before I realized Laurent was hiding under the bedâ¦â
âWell, you never know who could be knocking on the doorâ¦â he said in his defense, releasing Tildaâs hand and throwing his arm around her shoulder instead.
âOf course, he insisted on being included.â
âOkay, but that doesnât explain Corbin,â Caroline teased.
âHey, donât pretend like you arenât happy to see me. I can see the sparkle in your eyes.â Corbin joked, reaching up to grab hold of the steps above them, putting his muscular arms and shoulders on display.
âIâm pretty sure thatâs the reflection of the candle flame you can see, Corbin,â Tilda chimed in, and they all laughed.
